There's a saying that goes "A voice of reason is the only thing a fool ignores and a madman fears." Luckily, there are few voices of reason available to the American public. The Americans are not barbaric enough (as are we) to kill a defenseless enemy outright. And their justice system can be co-opted almost as easily as the Europeans'. The only real threat we face is from the extra-judicial system they have set up in places like Guantanamo. It's not that our fighters face torture (as we know it). Instead, without daily indoctrinations and orgies of death and destruction, they regain their humanity and therefore become useless to us. From the Strategy Page:
If one thing never seems to go
away, it is the claims of abuse and/or torture at Guantanamo Bay. The latest
claim comes from an Australian detainee captured around the time of the
American Taliban, Johnny Walker Lindh. In this case, the media outlet pushing
the story is the International Herald Tribune, a subsidiary of the New York Times. It is the big lie that never
goes away, having hit everything from newspapers to the floor of the United
States Senate to the TV series "Law and Order: Criminal Intent"...

The American media often knows but never cares whether what it is reporting is truth, fiction, or lie - as long as it is outrageous, inflammatory, and "anti-war." From the Strategy Page:
Islamic terrorists are encouraging
their supporters, who can write in English, to get on American web sites and
pretend to be friends or family members of American soldiers or marines. The
"media jehadis" are instructed to tell stories in line with the anti-war tone
of American and European media. Things like soldiers committing suicide because
they were forced to take part in atrocities in Iraq. Or wounded soldiers
suffering, or killing themselves, because of the poor care and abuse they have
received from the army. The media jihadis are told to make it sound like they
are simply passing on what a soldier said, not to pretend to be a soldier or
marine...

What we don't want the American public to know - and what their news media doesn't tell them.
From the Strategy Page:
In late 2006, there were
1,300 terrorist attacks a week recorded in Iraq. Most of these were minor
stuff, a few gunshots, or a bomb going off harmlessly (most roadside bomb
attacks fail). By January, this was down to 1,000 a week, and that continues to
drop. The "surge" is calming things down. It's become more dangerous
for civilians to appear on the streets with guns. Iraqi civilians continue to
be the primary victims of the violence, accounting for over 90 percent of the
deaths. However, this includes dead terrorists, and more of them are getting
killed as their safe houses and bomb factories are found and raided...
